Mental health is a vital component of overall well-being, and as awareness of its importance continues to grow, programs that foster wellness, education, and support have become more essential than ever. One such initiative is Recovery College, a program offered by the Canadian Mental Health Association – Calgary Region (CMHA Calgary), now available at multiple YMCA Calgary locations. CMHA Calgary's Recovery College provides free courses that help you develop your own resourcefulness, empowering individuals to take charge of their mental health and well-being.
As we kick off the new extension of this program to the SW, we wanted to celebrate by sharing more information about this important collaboration. Last week, we sat down with Ashley Lamantia, Senior Manager of Community Education and Wellness Initiatives at CMHA Calgary, to learn more about this impactful program, its positive influence on the community and how you can get involved!
YMCA: Ashley, can you introduce yourself and tell us about the CMHA Recovery College program?
Ashley: "Hi, I’m Ashley, and I’ve been with CMHA Calgary for nearly 15 years. I have a background in education and lived experience with mental health, and I lead community-based mental health education programs for both youth and adults.
One of our most popular programs is Recovery College, offered at YMCA locations across the city. Our Recovery College is designed to support individuals aged 16 and up who are dealing with mental health challenges. We focus on helping participants build their resilience and self-care skills. Our courses are open to everyone, with no referral or diagnosis required. It's all about making mental health education accessible to all."
YMCA: Could you share a story of someone who benefited from participating in the Recovery College program?
Ashley: "Certainly! One recent participant shared how attending a mindfulness and mental health course was transformative for them. They had struggled with anxiety for years and often felt overwhelmed. After taking our course, they learned practical tools like breathing exercises and grounding techniques. These simple strategies became anchors during difficult moments.
The participant also mentioned how important the supportive environment was, the facilitators, who bring lived experience to their teaching, created a safe space where vulnerability was welcomed and progress felt achievable. It’s stories like this that really highlight the power of education combined with compassion."
YMCA: What makes Recovery College unique compared to other mental wellness programs?
Ashley: "At Recovery College, we take an educational approach rather than a traditional support group model. We focus on empowering individuals to develop their own strengths and resilience on their recovery journey.
Our facilitators are guides, not lecturers, and we create a space where participants can learn from one another. Many of our facilitators are Peer Support Workers, people with lived experience of mental health or substance use, so the learning is very relatable. We also emphasize that education is a key part of mental health care, and by shifting focus to wellness education, we see success in participants’ increased mental health literacy and their ability to care for themselves."
YMCA: What outcomes can participants expect after enrolling in Recovery College?
Ashley: "Participants often leave with a sense of hope and belonging, feeling more connected to themselves and others. They gain practical tools to manage difficult situations and make healthier choices, even when things get tough. Many participants report an increased sense of self-awareness, self-esteem, and emotional balance, along with resiliency strategies that are tailored to their own needs. It’s all about finding what works best for each person on their wellness journey."
YMCA Why did CMHA Calgary choose to partner with the YMCA on this program?
Ashley: "We were really excited to partner with the YMCA because they’re such a trusted, accessible community resource.
Many individuals facing mental health challenges encounter barriers to accessing care, whether it's stigma, lack of knowledge about community-based education, or difficulties traveling to services. The YMCA provides a safe, welcoming environment where people feel comfortable and supported. We also believe in the strong connection between physical and mental health and offering both in one space makes perfect sense. This partnership has allowed us to reach new audiences and extend our programs beyond the spaces where we might normally be found."
YMCA: What would you say to someone who is considering joining but might feel unsure?
Ashley: "If you're thinking about joining but feel unsure, I’d encourage you to give it a try! Our courses are open to anyone aged 16+, no matter where you are on your wellness journey. There’s something for everyone, whether you're just beginning to explore mental health or are looking for new tools to support your recovery.
When the course starts, our instructors will make sure everyone feels comfortable and welcome, and there’s always room for group discussions, though participation is completely optional. We aim to create a friendly, supportive environment where people can engage in whatever way feels right for them."
YMCA: Where can people find more information or sign up for Recovery College?
Ashley: "To learn more about the Recovery College or explore other mental health services we offer, visit our website at CMHA Calgary. We’re excited to continue our work with the YMCA to offer accessible, empowering mental health education across Calgary.
The partnership between CMHA Calgary's Recovery College and the YMCA is centered on building a community of care, providing tools, resources, and education that empower individuals to take charge of their mental wellness.
