First up... Meet Tamara Lee, Senior General Manager, Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge.
Tamara, can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi, I’m Tamara Lee, the Senior General Manager at Shane Homes YMCA, where I oversee operations and support our vibrant community in North Calgary. My journey with the Y started 15 years ago when I worked as a Summer Camp Counselor at Camp Chief Hector. It was there that I discovered my passion for creating outdoor experiences that inspire growth and connection.
Since then, I’ve worn many hats. From part-time lifeguard during my university days to Aquatics Director at the Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA, and later, Membership Manager and General Manager of Sport. Each role has deepened my appreciation for the Y’s mission of building healthier communities. I’m proud to be part of a team that helps individuals and families thrive every day.
What is your favourite activity at the YMCA and why?
One of my favorite activities is attending our special youth events with my family. It’s incredible to see the kids’ excitement as they make friends, learn new skills, and connect with the community.
As a family, we also love spending time at the pool. It’s a refreshing change of pace from the hockey rinks we frequent throughout the week, and it’s a space where we can relax, have fun, and stay active together.
What do you think makes the YMCA community so special?
The YMCA is special because it’s a place where everyone belongs. Our community is built on diversity, welcoming people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. It’s a space where milestones happen every day, whether it’s a child passing their swim test, a newcomer attending their first fitness class, or a teen discovering the joy of volunteering.
I love watching members thrive, celebrate their achievements, and form lasting friendships in our spaces. The YMCA isn’t just a fitness facility, it’s a hub for growth, connection, and fun.
What’s your top tip for members to make the most of their YMCA experience?
Take advantage of everything we have to offer!
Whether you’re here for fitness, family programs, or community events, there’s something for everyone. Don’t hesitate to ask our staff for recommendations or guidance. We’re here to help you achieve your goals and discover new passions.

Thanks, Tamara!
