Y Story: Lisa Coultry

Lisa Coultry

Meet Lisa Coultry, an inspiring donor and fitness instructor volunteer dedicated to sharing her passion for fitness with her community.

Lisa’s relationship with the YMCA began in an unassuming way, as many do – with a desire to stay fit. She first joined the South YMCA on Haddon Road, inspired by the fitness classes. From the moment she stepped through the doors, Lisa found not just a gym at the YMCA, but a community that would shape her life.

After the closure of Eau Claire YMCA, Lisa moved to Shawnessy YMCA to continue with her love for fitness. “The Shawnessy YMCA is a wonderful community,” she shares. “I love going to classes, and I love teaching the classes. It’s a welcoming place where you can build long-term friendships.”

While Lisa was always active and passionate about group fitness, she initially hesitated to take the leap into teaching. “I’ve always been active and always loved group fitness. The gym is my happy place,” she explains.

It was the encouragement from both staff and fellow fitness enthusiasts that eventually convinced her to embrace the new role. “I realized that the support I received from my friends and the YMCA staff was invaluable. Their belief in me made my decision to become a fitness instructor much easier.”

Since 2017, Lisa has dedicated her time to volunteering at the YMCA, leading Group Power and High-Intensity Training (HIT) classes. Her enthusiasm and commitment have made her a beloved figure in the Shawnessy community. Lisa’s classes are not just about fitness; they create a sense of belonging and community among participants.

“For me, this is my own personal chapter in my life. The YMCA is now more than just a gym; I have met a lot of friends here. It is just a wonderful place for me to be,” she reflects.

Lisa’s commitment to the YMCA extends beyond her role as an instructor. For the past decade, she has been a consecutive donor to YMCA Calgary, driven by a desire to give back to the community that has given her so much. “I have a passion for fitness, and the reason I donate is to help give another person the ability to experience this at the Y, whether through membership or helping a child attend camp or swimming. It is all very valuable,” she emphasizes.

Lisa fully believes in the power of the community programs and services that the YMCA offers and making them accessible to everyone, regardless of their circumstances. Join us today in supporting the YMCA and helping make it a place of community, friendship, and fitness. Donate today.
