Hi Mitch, thanks for connecting with us today. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Greetings from the Remington YMCA in Quarry Park! I’m Mitch Hanen, and for almost three years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as the General Manager of this incredible facility.

My YMCA journey began as a young camper at Camp Chief Hector, a place that still holds a special place in my heart. I officially joined the YMCA team as the event coordinator during the opening of Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton. Over time, I worked my way up to my current role, where I get to help foster the same sense of community and connection that first inspired me as a camper.

What’s your favourite activity at the YMCA?
For me, nothing beats playing basketball. Whether it’s a quick pick-up game, shooting hoops solo with music in the background, or just being in the gym, basketball has always been my way to unwind and stay active.

What makes the YMCA community special?
The YMCA is all about genuine connections. As I walk through the facility during the day, I catch moments of people chatting after a fitness class, parents bonding while watching their kids’ soccer games, or swimmers sharing a laugh in the pool lanes. It’s these small but meaningful interactions that make the YMCA so unique. It is truly a place of connection and belonging.

What is your best tip for YMCA members?
Stay open to trying new things outside of your comfort zone. The YMCA offers so many different activities and events; you might discover something you never expected to love! For me, that was pickleball. I gave it a shot and now it’s one of my favourite ways to stay active and connect with others.

Thanks, Mitch! It was a pleasure catching up with you.
