The Benefits of Esports Beyond Gaming

At the YMCA Calgary, community is more than a word: it is a shared experience, a place of belonging, and for many, the beginning of a lifelong journey. For Kurt, our Esports Supervisor, community extends beyond the physical space of the YMCA, and into the digital world of gaming.

"What we’re seeing with Esports is so much more than gaming. It’s creating opportunities for kids to connect, build confidence, and develop skills that go far beyond the screen,” Kurt shares as he reflects on the benefit that the esports program has on youth.

Kurt's journey with the YMCA started ten years ago when he joined as a camp counsellor. From there, he spent some time in Outreach, Indigenous Programming, and our Alternative Suspension program. When the position opened to become YMCA Calgary's Esports Supervisor, Kurt knew it was the perfect fit.

For Kurt, esports at the YMCA is about more than playing video games. It's about creating a space for youth to connect, build skills, and grow.

“The YMCA is a place where people can be themselves and develop in their own way. It's a chance to play with a coach, develop their skills, and meet other people in a healthy, constructive environment."

One memorable experience for Kurt was watching a youth compete in his first tournament, applying the lessons learned in practice. “He lost his first round but fought back to secure second place.” Kurt recalls the youth using all the skills taught by his coaches to persevere through a tough start. It was a powerful example of how youth not only develop gaming skills but also learn to overcome adversity.

Kurt sees the YMCA’s Esports program as an opportunity to create a healthy, inclusive space for youth who may not have found their place in traditional sports or other programs.  The sense of community that esports fosters is one of the program’s most significant benefits.

For Kurt, this mirrors his own experience in the competitive gaming world, “all my current friends right now are all from the Smash Bros community” he shares. The bond formed through gaming has carried over to his personal life, creating a network of support that goes beyond the game itself. By offering a structured, supportive environment for gaming, the YMCA is helping participants develop not just as gamers, but as individuals.

“Esports at the YMCA is more than just gaming; it's about creating a space where young people can build friendships, learn teamwork, and develop leadership skills. It's a community where everyone is welcome, and where gaming becomes a tool for growth and connection.”
