With the summer temperatures in full swing, we're all enjoying our time outside! This also means there are risks associated with the heat, and it's important to take care of ourselves and our loved ones during this time. Read on to learn about heat stress, signs and symptoms, and how you can prevent it and make the most of your summer!

What is Heat Stress? 

Heat stress occurs when the body can't cool itself effectively, leading to a rise in core temperature and increased heart rate.

Symptoms of Heat Stroke Include:

  • Excessive sweating
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Disorientation

Causes and Risk Factors:

  • High ambient temperatures: Working in hot, humid environments.
  • Physical exertion: Strenuous activities without rest or hydration.
  • Dehydration: Lack of adequate hydration.
  • Personal factors: Certain medical conditions, medications, and lifestyle factors.

Prevention Strategies:

  • Stay hydrated: Drink water, fruit juice, or vegetable juice; avoid caffeinated beverages.
  • Take breaks: Rest and cool down as needed.
  • Wear appropriate clothing: Lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored, breathable fabrics.
  • Use engineering controls: Implement ventilation or fans to reduce temperatures.
  • Educate: Recognize signs and symptoms of heat stress and preventive measures.
  • Monitor: Keep an eye on weather forecasts.
