"One of the best jobs out there" - Wesley's Journey as a YMCA Lifeguard

Six years ago, my dad was teaching me how to drive. I remember pointing out the window and saying, “what is that thing?” Well, that “thing” happened to be Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge mid-construction. I never thought months later I would start my first lifeguarding job at that very facility, or that six years later I would still love what I do.

Once I started working at the YMCA, I never looked back. I immediately connected with the staff and felt a sense of community. Although the facility had only been open for two weeks and we were all learning the ropes, we supported each other and quickly hit our stride. The experience made me fall in love with this place, our team all worked together and brought out the best in one another.

In September 2022, I was hired as an Aquatics Coordinator. This was one of the scariest moments of my life, as I was not sure I was ready. At that time, we were just coming out of the pandemic and faced with onboarding challenges, but we prioritized staff happiness and wellbeing and worked together.  I was inspired by how our team overcame this challenge, which led me to pursue Business Management in university.

I have now been at the YMCA for six and a half years. Reflecting back, I want to share a message with anyone considering becoming a lifeguard:

Lifeguarding might seem intimidating, especially if it is your first job. You might feel unprepared, but the learning experience is unparalleled. The best part of this job is the acquisition of life skills. It teaches you how to interact and grow within a team, communicate with all types of people, think critically, and solve problems. You develop a sense of responsibility and purpose in helping others. You will gain organizational skills and situational awareness. And you will become a great teacher by learning how to interact with and instruct different age groups.

This is one of the best jobs out there for many reasons, but most importantly, for the learning and self-growth it fosters. If I had the opportunity to do it all over again, I would.
