Y Story: Rebecca Rooney

Staff spotlight. Introducing Rebecca. "Everyone at the Y is so helpful and cares about each other."

At the YMCA, we believe in people. We see their potential. We find strength in telling stories of our differences and find inspiration in sharing our diversity – all with the purpose of bringing us closer together.

Meet Rebecca, a dedicated and passionate youth worker with the Alternative Suspension Program (ASP). She supports suspended students from schools in the Northwest, by providing workshops to help the youth navigate through any struggles they may be facing in school or in their community.

Rebecca's passion for working with youth stems from her previous experience working in a group home. She was attracted to the Y for of its unique approach to youth development and the positive impact it has on the lives of the youth. Seeing her students develop improved academics, increased motivation, and personal growth is what makes her job truly rewarding.

“I love being a part of the Y and building that connection with the community and youth.”

The sense of community and connection at the YMCA has been a wonderful experience for Rebecca since moving to Calgary. It has been a very meaningful experience for her, and she is grateful to be a part of this program and make a positive impact in the lives of the youth.

Rebecca has built confidence in her work and has allowed her to see personal growth. The positive impact the program has had on the youth, as well as the conversations she has had with principles about the program, has stood out to her. Youth who have gone through the program often speak positively about it, and it has helped change the perception of being suspended.

“The Y is helping youth through ASP develop skills to carry them through life and I get to help them build those skills.”

YMCA Calgary’s Alternative Suspension Program (ASP) establishes bonds of trust and creates a support network for students who have been or are at risk of being suspended from school. ASP aims to reduce future suspensions by offering participants an opportunity to turn their time away from school into a positive experience that encourages personal growth.

YMCA Calgary believes in people, and with individuals like Rebecca we are able to provide a space for youth to grow, learn and connect to communities that are welcoming and inspiring.
